Back-to-School Prep for Theater Teachers: What You Need to Do

It is time to head back to school! Unsure of how to show up the most prepared? Or just need to figure out the best order? This article is for you!

Choose a Play

Obviously, the first step is choosing a play. Consider the number of total students you have and the ratio of male to female actors. You should also determine whether the story should focus on a few leads or an ensemble. Additionally, think about other elements that contribute to a play, such as special effects and costuming, and ensure that your budget and time aligns. But most importantly, choose a play that you enjoy reading and will be fun to bring to the stage!

We have found that Free Spirit plays encompass all needs and preferences when looking for plays.

Logistics

Unfortunately, some logistical things do have to be take care of. Make sure that you secure the rights of the play you choose and have paid any royalties. Also ensure that you have any administrative approval needed.

To ensure a successful show, select a date that allows you sufficient time to prepare. Determine the required number of rehearsals and their length.

Consider Your Vision

Now, back to the fun stuff. When you start working on a script, it’s important to think about the overall look and feel of the show you want to create. The goal is to bring all the aspects of the production—from costumes to sets to blocking—together to fit that vision. While reaching Broadway-level may not be the most feasible, you can still create something fun and meaningful.
